I know that the war is over, but i have one question left. For all sakes and purposes, which format was better? I'm not talking about which studios singed up with which, but as for actual physical specifications (memory, FPS, sound, etc.) which one was actually better and why?

  1. first to the other poster true HD is 1080p not 1080i

And between the two technologies there have their pros and cons. from the companies POV HD-DVD is cheaper to make because it use the same process and/or hardware as for regular dvd as in blu-ray is a complete new process meaning they have to invest in machines new software and hardware to make blu-ray.  Beside that  blu-ray have more storage capacity over HD-DVD discs. So from our POV blu-ray is better because for us the cost of the movie is around the same that hd-dvd and BR have more storage and other features like java interactive applications and more.

  2. As an early adopter of the Format War I personally chose HD-DVD as I thought it was the superior format, Why? It was a finished product whereas Blu Ray will continue to develop in profile releases. Most of the first generation players were profile 1.0 which there are still many out there. Blu Ray will not be a finished product until profile 2.0 is out. People may argue that Blu Ray has higher capacity (50 gigs) and higher bitrates compared to HD-DVD, but to me it was not worth hundreds of dollars more. To me the cost to experience ratio was far greater in HD-DVD's favor. I sold my hddvd setup and went blu when Warner announced it's exclusivity to Blu-Ray. Sucks to see such a great format such as HD-DVD  have to go, but Sony had to win one of these format wars.

  3. blu ray is better...

  4. If you are interested in true HD 1080i and only want to deal with the High def type DVDs then go with Blue Ray, however, if you are interested in up converting your old standard DVDs then you are better off going with an HD DVD for two reasons.  One it up converts at a better quality than Blue Ray and two it is cheaper than Blue Ray yet better than a standard up converting DVD player.  However, you have to have the proper setup and HD TV to see any difference between the HD DVD and the standard uncovering DVD player.  The reason why Blue Ray is not as Good at up converting is that Blue Ray is made for Blue Ray discs.  It will still play DVD (would be silly not to) in Hi-Def but since its not a Blue Ray disc the laser doesn't do the disc justice.  Also HD DVD is more concerned with picture quality than extras.  Blue Ray has more extras than HD DVD, but realistically how much do people really use the extras?  Unfortunately Blue Ray won so you can't get any new movies, but there are plenty of released for HD DVD, and most of them are on sale.  I bought some from Best Buy a couple of weeks ago for 30% off.

  5. Better is an opinion.

Most of the truly objective people and industry magazines agreed that they had a hard time determining which had a superior image (between similar spec machines) and Blu-Ray seemed to have the edge in audio (to the few who had a good enough audio system to tell the difference). HD DVD had the edge in price and manufacturing (all they had to do was modify DVD plants). They were also more fully featured earlier. Blu-Ray had the edge in support, marketing and ultimate capacity(HD DVD had 35GB vs. BD 50GB to begin with and they were talking about 51GB vs. 100GB after expected upgrades to both platforms). They are releasing in a month or two some Blu-Ray players that will have the advanced features like auto-updates that HD DVD already had. Blu-Ray also had a not-so-secret weapon called PS3 that made a huge difference in the format war.
