Blu-ray and DVD's?

I looked on the Blu-ray site, it seems to suggest that a Blu-ray player will also play a regular DVD. Will a Blu-ray disc play in a regular DVD player? It looks like they are saying that the disc can be made to do so, but are they being made to do so?

At this time blu-ray discs won't work in standard dvd players....and I don't think that will change....ever. Do you really think that the makers of the blu-ray players want people to be able to watch the high def movies on their old dvd players without having to spend 500$ or more on a new blu-ray player? Plus current dvd players do not have the right audio/video decoders as well as they don't have the same lenses (dvd uses red lasers and blu-ray uses a blu laser to read discs).

No.  They are only saying that Blu-Ray players are backward compatible.

a blu-ray player can play blu-ray and dvds but you cannot play a blu-ray disc on a blu-ray player. the other format hd-dvd uses double sided hd dvd's on side plays only on hd dvd player but the other side is coded in dvd format so you can play it on a standard dvd

Regular dvd's will play in all players. Blu-ray only play in blu-ray players and HD dvd's will only play in HD players. I plan on waiting until I see which ones will win out before I buy one.

No.  A Blu-Ray disc cannot play down on a regular DVD player because the actual Blu-Ray DVD contains more information, that a skinnier laser (thus the name Blu-Ray) can read.  The same laser can read a regular DVD but not the opposite.
