Question:

Blu ray audio?

I recently purchased fantastic 4 on blu ray region b and shocked to find out that its audio was in dts only not dolby digital. I thought all blu ray dvds were in 5.1 dolby digital. After checking on play.com for the above film its audio is only dts.

So i was not happy when i got no sound through my 5.1 dolby digital surround sound so ended up selling it now again on ebay.

Can anyone advise why they do this of some films which have audio in dts only

thanks

  1. Interesting -- the BD spec requires DD support on players (As stated in the article at the link)

"BD-ROM players are required to support Dolby Digital AC-3, DTS, and linear PCM. Players may optionally support Dolby Digital Plus, and lossless formats Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD."

However, the BDA website FAQ's says:

"this simply means that Blu-ray players and recorders will have to support playback of these audio codecs, it will still be up to the movie studios to decide which audio codec(s) they use for their releases."

So --- I'd make your dissatisafaction known to Fox (They may have learnt their lesson since there is DD on F4: RSS .... but also remember in future to check the labelling on disks in future.

  2. You'll have to try an ANALOG connection to your Home Theater receiver.  Most receivers have a "5.1 analog input" which is simply 3 pairs of RCA jacks.  Two for the FRONT speakers, two for the REAR, one for CENTER and one for the SUB.  Your Blu-ray Disc player can decode the "DTS" (internally) then send it to your receiver (if it has the analog input jacks).  Your FIBER OPTIC (or DIGITAL COAX) connection won't let you take advantage of the SOUND Blu-ray has to offer.  Try hooking it up like this: http://www.avtruths.com/uncompressed.htm...

Most U.S. Blu-ray Discs offer an "Uncompressed 5.1" soundtrack in addtion to any others ("DolbyTrueHD" or "DTSHD Master Audio").  None of these audio formats can be accessed with the standard digital connection we use on regular DVD players (but the Blu-ray players are smart enough to "water-down" the new audio formats into signals our current equipment can use).  Here's a quick list of all the Dolby/DTS audio formats available (up to and including the latest HD versions): http://www.avtruths.com/dolbydts.html

If you don't have the proper connections on your current receiver (5.1 analog input), you won't be able to get more than 2-channels of "uncompressed" audio out of a Blu-ray Disc.  But there are new receivers (starting at $500) which offer the HDMI input and the proper on-board decoders to handle whatever audio format they're given.  But a standard,  analog connection wouldn't cost you anything.

  3. Some Fox movies on blu-ray only have DTS HD Master. I have it in region 1 and while DTS HD Master is the primary audio track there's a spanish Dolby 5.1 track....but I don't know any spanish and I have a dts receiver.....so yeah.....maybe it's time to upgrade the receiver eh?

  4. This makes no sense

Dolby Digital LOSSY (5.1) and DTS  are both  mandatory in both HD DVD and Blu Ray

    See

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_...

Where it is getting complex is in supporting Lossless multi-channel.

So, the film should have both Dolby and DTS.

  5. First off, they don't make blu-ray discs anymore.

Second off, Make sure that all of your connections are tight and secure.

Third off, make sure that you're buu-ray discs are 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound.

If you're using a universal remote, make sure it's fully functional with digital sound. If it isn't, try setting the settings to 5.1 with your original remote for your audio reciver.

Make sure you're audio reciver is on and set to DVD, this'll allow you're functions to run properly.

If you hooked-up your reciver through any other mode, such as PHONO, CD, BLU-RAY, or TV, make sure that you set the appropriete function by putting the audio reciver on that mode.
