  1. they have better quilaty

  2. Blu ray disc also have a coating of about 0.1 mm thick on the bottom to protect the information... which basically helps protect it from scratches and damage more so than the regualr discs.....

  3. Other than having higher quality video, they use newer surround sound technologies. The sound on Blu-Ray is uncompressed or lossless and the big difference is this.....on dvd's sound is compressed just like how an mp3 is shrunk from its original size from the CD. When this "shrinking" process is done, you lose some of the sound quality. So uncompressed audio tracks maintain the quality of the original master recording just as the directors and makers of the film intended it to sound. Lossless audio means it's compressed but without loss of quality. A lot of newer releases are also including a 7.1 surround audio track meaning that those with a 7 speaker plus subwoofer configuration can now make full use of their speakers.

Also another difference is the level of interactivity that special features have. You can see picture-in-picture commentaries explaining how stunts and effects are done while it is happening.

  4. They look the same, but contain much more info and are read with a "blue" laser (instead of "red" as on a normal CD or DVD drive).

They can be used for data (as in computers) or HD video. In the later use they can store movies recorded in 1080p resolution and multiple soundtracks of high definition audio.

Blu-ray drives will read both Blu-ray and normal DVds, but a normal DVD drive won't read Blu-ray.

See the link for detailed info.

  5. higher quality

  6. A single sided DVD has a capacity of about 9.4GB and a Blu-Ray has about 50GB. Blu-Ray gets its' name from the blue laser it uses to read the disc, DVD and CD use red. Blue lasers have a smaller wavelength and so the information can be more tightly compacted on the disc. Blu-Ray also has a much faster bitrate meaning that information can be read much faster which is important for the HD programming to look good. And if you didn't know...Blu-Ray just won the HD format war.
