  1. The only blu-ray player currently on the market today that is "future proof" is the Playstation 3. Sony has done this deliberatley so that no other Blu-ray players will be bought as they are not firmware updateable. If you just want a cheap player that plays movies in high definition buy a HD DVD player. even though they are no longer being made you can pick one up for around $99 and they will play your old dvds in near high def. If you are set on a blu-ray player though buy a PS3. Even panasonics "final blu-ray" may be obsolete in 12 months.

  2. The bargains are basically early -- now obsolete -- players no knowledgeable consumer wants.

In general I'd advise against buying Profile 1.0 or even 1.1 players. Wait for Profile 2.0 (BD-Live!) ... unless you never want to take advantage of the great extra features being built into newer disks.

Samsung is being sued for not updating an early player (profile 1.0) because some movies won't even play ... so do research before buying a Samsung player.
