  1. No, you cannot.  You need a separate receiver to power the speakers.

  2. It depends on what outputs you have on the player. If it has an optical output, there are speaker systems with their own built-in amplifiers available that can connect to it directly, for instance Logitech Z-5500 speakers. Regular unpowered speakers won't work without a home theater receiver to drive them.

  3. yes, but you'd need superhero hearing to listen to it.

the player will have analog line outs. you need an amplifier between the blue ray and the speaker.

some speaker systems have amps built into them, particularly if they come in a set with a subwoofer. if thats what you mean, then its possible.

  4. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. No (or at least not normal speakers).

    Here are the rules:

    - If a jack is an RCA output, optical, HDMI - the signals are line-level. These are weak signals and cannot drive speakers.

    - If a jack is for speaker wires - the signals contain watts of power and can drive speakers.

So you need an AV receiver to convert the line-level signals to speaker level.

The other way - get a good set of 5.1 computer speakers.  These speakers are self-powered so you dont need an AV Receiver.
