  1. Depending on the model, it will play the DVDs in regular mode and upconvert to 1080 (if you want).

It's best to see which does the best interpolation.

Play it in standard 480p mode on the TV and see how the TV displays it, then play upconverted 1080(i or p) and see how the blu-ray machines does.

    Check the specifications:

    They will have things like

    DVD+/-RW, DVD+-R, CD-R,CD-RW...and so on.

So, to really answer you question, your blu-ray player will play those regular DVDs just as good as the $29 models at walmat...basically.

  2. Blu Ray players will play standard DVDs and if connected to an HDTV with an HDMI cable the DVD will be "Upconverted" to near HD quality. It's not true HD as the standard DVD does not contain enough information to display in true HD, but it gives a much better image than a standard DVD player.

If considering buying a Blu Ray player, most in the electronics industry strongly recommend the Playstation 3. Even though you might think of it as a game amchine it is by far the best and most "future proof" Blu Ray player on the market and the only player currently available for under 500 dollars that will play all the features of a BD Profile 2.0 disc.
