Question:

Blue Hippo Tang getting stressed...

by  |  earlier

My blue hippo tang was placed in a new tank I got (72 gallon), and

now it hasn't stopped from rubbing and hitting itself with the glass.

He doesn't have ich. Also, my Foxface has been doing the same thing

now. He only stops when I feed them, but then he continues again.

Any suggestions?

Thank you,

Khris

  1. u cycled a tank in one day and added a hippo tang and foxface...

um that is the wrong stocking for a new tank. hippo tangs can get stressed easily and they will need alot of rockwork as they will like to hide. they also get marine ich very easily.

foxfaces are posionious so idk why you would want one, but they are still a moderate fish.

make sure ur salinity is in the right level and make sure the rockwork is correct.

other than that you really have to wait and add more fish once the levels calm down, more easy fish like clowns and chromis to help stablisze the aquarium.

  2. your hippo tang isn't stressed he is dieing.  Your tank is not nearly ready to house either one of these fish.  The bacteria has not matured and your tank is not cycled.  You need to cycle your tank

This could take up to 8 weeks.  You need a marine test kit to be sure.  Water params aren't just the PH.  What is the ammonia right now?  You should not have placed anything into the tank without first checking the salinity.  You don't know if it is too high or if it is too low.  You need to get a salt water test kit and test the water before you loose your fish.  Unfortunately with salt water you cannot just remove the fish and put them elsewhere.  Your fish are going to go thru a very trying time over the next few weeks.  I would suggest getting some Kick Ich and keep it on hand.  It is a salt water ich killer.  Don't get the ich meds for fresh water Marine ich is different.

6-8 weeks for salt water cycling.  The only way to be sure is to test

  3. Is your tank cycled?  what is the salinity? temp? water parameters?

EDIT: it takes 6-8 weeks to cycle a tank, how did you cycle it just yesterday?  I suggest you check the salinity make sure that it is 1.024 and the temp need to come up closer to 80-82 and make sure that it has plenty to eat, tangs are one of the few that actually stop when they are not hungry.  Water parameters are more then PH, that is a good PH level but what about ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?

  4. You can't cycle a saltwater tank in one day! OMG! most likely all your fish will die. Can't believe u did that. You really should have did alot of research before u buy for the sake of the fish.  Know wonder it is stressed.
