Well today we were about to go somewhere and I saw two bluejays in the yard, but from a distance I could tell one didn't look right and I'm not sure what the second was doing there before it flew off. When I went to investigate, the ailing bluejay was laying/crouching by the weeds, and its head looked...wrong. It didn't blink or do anything about the insects trying to get at its eyes, and its head kept tilting or falling down to its side. Its beak was open and it had pooped and the left wing was partially extended and it didn't try to escape, but when I tried to move it from underneath with a stick, to see if it was bleeding or something, it kinda tried to bite the stick or something; didn't look happy to see me. Then I really gently tried to move its head back "on top" with the stick and it just kept falling down. We had to go and my mom said it broke its neck or the other bluejay tried killing it or something, so I put a few leaves over it to keep the sun and bugs off and (cont'd)

  1. It could have possibly flown into a window and either broke it's neck or had major head trauma.  This might be what happened considering you said it's head did not look right.

  2. could have been west nile.  blue jays are one of the birds that are very sensitive to the virus and from your description it did sound to have neurologic problems and weakness.  Regardless,  I don't think there is much you could have done for it.  It was nice of you to try and make it more comfortable.
