  1. They are incompatible formats which look like DVDs but use a blue laser (instead of red) to allow much higher storage (50GB), and support 1080p / 24 fps video with advanced HD audio codecs.

There are technical differences, but from the user perspective -- particulalry where it counts, video and audio quality -- the two formats are essentially identical.

The problem for the consumer is that different studios support the formats and most movies  are available only in one or the other format.

Transformers is an HD DVD (or DVD) disk ... not available on Blu-ray.

You would be advised to consider whether you can benefit from HD disks .... do you have an HDTV (preferably 40" or larger and 1080p)? Do you have HDMI inputs?

HD DVD players start at ~$200, while Blu-ray is more expensive (~$300). HD DVD pllayers are somewhat more capable (re extra features) and the specs are more standard/stable than Blu-ray.

If you can benefit, look at which format supports more movies you like (recognizing that there are still only about 800 titles (total) available) and pick a format based on that ... or consider a dual format player (expensive).

That all said, the differences from DVD are appreciable, but not startling. See the comparison photos (mouseover to see the alternate version) of DVD and Blu-ray (sorry couldn't find a similar HD DVD to DVD comparison, but they are almost identical). You might feel it isn't worth the extra costs (player plus more expensive disks).

    Hope this helps.

  2. I prefer blu-ray because it's presence is bigger due to the PS3 etc.  Recently I was in a computer shop in Melbourne, Australia; and I saw a blu-ray burner on the shelf, but no HD DVD player.  Go figure.

  3. for me i prefer blu-ray, the quality is outstanding.  one of the first i got was planet earth (not that long ago i know) but i was just completely blown away with how crystal clear it is.  also blu ray have released a number of old movies aswell as the new ones, they have quite a collection so you can see your old favourites on blu-ray too, it's quite an experience.  although it might not be easy to locate them all within the uk, they are fairly cheap in the states and it would probably be quite easy to order them from there... amazon has alot actually.  and transformers is great, i love it! haha

  4. Blue Ray, in fact the PS3 has been reviewed as one of the top Blue Ray DVD players.

  5. blu-ray sounds much cooler

  6. Transformers is only available on HD-DVD and Standard DVD, because Paramount Films only support these formats at present. But if they lose the format war to Blu-ray, then you will have wasted your money. Its best to buy on Standard DVD (£9.00 at Morrisons)

  7. Check out the latest format war info right here: http://www.avtruths.com/blurayvshddvd.ht...

  8. Both are the same for us users

its just that PS3 uses blu ray and i think that its gonna become the only standard. so i advice u to go for the blu ray stuff

  9. Transformers are only on  DVD & HD-DVD format. Just like the commercial says. Scarface & Indiana Jones collection are coming on HD-DVD next year.

Ok HD-DVD it is 3 times capacity then DVD. Blu-ray it is 5 times capacity then DVD. Both formats have equal sound. But, HD-DVD it has more futures then blu-ray disk.

Example HD-DVD is has "Combo HD-DVD & DVD sides, online internet, has no region coding, upscales picture when you play  DVD on HD-DVD player for sharper picture & more extras".

The problem with the blu-ray player it is the "region coding". My friend he had brand NEW "Pirates of the Carri bean Dead Man Chest" on blu-ray format & would not play on NEW Sony Blu-ray player. Anyways, HD-DVD movies there are mostly more like for adults movie & blu-ray it has more kids movies. I personly I have both formats.

It is NOT about technology! It is about affordable prices & good selection.

    -Good luck!

    P.S. I support HD-DVD & Blu-ray. : )

  10. Blue Ray is Sony and is therefore the better system.  However, Sony had a history of releasing the better system but then restricting its use.

Hopefully though they have learned a lesson from the last time around!
