Question:

Blue mosquito?

I was watching a nature show once, and the host was showing some type of mosquito that landed on him. It was somewhat larger than normal, and metallic blue; it may have had moth-like antennae. It looked very unique. I'm not sure if this was in the Amazon specifically, but it was some type of rain forest. I did some googling a while back, but I wasn't able to find the species' name, and I don't remember it from the show. Can anybody identify this mosquito?

  3. It was maybe a elephant mosquito, because they are larger. THey are not so metallic tho. It might be a crane fly, and some crane fly have such antennae. Here is a pic of the elephant mosquito, which eats other mosquitoes and does not drink blood.

They were used in various places as pest control, and their larvae, and some adults eat the larvae and adults of different species. THey are beneficial. Another factor that matches your description is that it is larger than other mosquitoes.

The genus is Toxorhynchite(all elephant mosquitoes)

    and the species is rutilus

  4. It was the toxorhynchites rutilus  It has blue and purple iridescent scales on it's body and legs.
