Blues defeats the Chiefs after a close contest – Super Rugby news
The Auckland Blues defeated the Waikato Chiefs in a Super Rugby match in Hamilton.
The Blues overcame the Chiefs in a low scoring game with a narrow score of 16-13. The Blues made a good comeback during the second half and managed a close victory. The win has placed the Blues on top of the New Zealand derbies.
The Chiefs started off in a great way and scored in the very first minute of the match. It was slippery surface at Waikato stadium in Hamilton and the Chiefs utilized it well. They were looking out of control. It was their captain Liam Messam who opened
the account for his team and later on during the 22nd minute of the play Lelia Masaga doubled the score for Chiefs. They were leading the match by 10-6 at the interval but later on in the second part of the game, they could not maintain the flow.
On the other hand, the visitors Blues really suffered from the wet conditions. They made an impressive comeback in the dying moments of the game and snatched the victory from Chiefs. Their fullback Isaia Toeava paced up the momentum and scored a quick try.
McAlister deceived the Chiefs’ defenders and reached to the goal areas. His conversion increased three points for Blues and later on his brilliant kick from 45m left the Chiefs disappointed in the end.
The Blues’ captain Keven Mealamu was delighted by the surprising victory and said it was a tough day for both the teams.
He said, “Conditions evened the game out and both teams played with a lot of passion and we were lucky to come away with the points and win that game. Playing at the right part of the field at the right time and we did that better in the second half and
were able to build pressure.”
After this victory, the Blues are leading on the points table as for as New Zealand derbies are concerned. They have now claimed most victories among their other home teams after playing six matches in the ongoing Super Rugby season.
