English Premier League giants Chelsea have confirmed their influential midfielder Michael Essien is out for six months after sustaining a knee injury during pre-season training. The 28-year-old will now be unavailable for the beginning of the season for
the Blues as they prepare for the upcoming season.
After picking up the injury, the midfielder underwent surgery, which was reportedly successful. He is currently recovering from the surgery, a process which will take up to six months. The club released an official statement, which read:
“Following an injury to his right knee in training last week, Michael Essien had surgery today to repair a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus.
The surgery was successful and Michael's full recovery could take up to six months.”
Andre Villas-Boas, the newly appointed Chelsea manager, revealed that while everyone was disappointed by the early injury Essien had sustained, they were hoping he would recover and return for the Blues as soon as possible.
Villas-Boas said in an interview:
“Everyone at Chelsea wishes http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-c25261 well for his recovery. His team-mates and all the staff and I look forward to helping him return to playing as soon as possible.”
Essien’s injury adds to Chelsea’s growing problems in midfield, with most of their existing players in midfield having already crossed 30. The Blues currently do not have long term solutions for their midfield.
The few players they have been linked with, who could be brought in to replace Essien, are also around 30. One of the players most likely to be Essien’s short term replacement is West Ham United midfielder Scott Parker.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international was highly impressive with the Hammers last season, but with West Ham United having been relegated, he is looking for a move away. So far, former side Chelsea look like favourites to land him in the summer.
Chelsea are also still chasing Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric, making an improved bid of £27 million for the Croatian midfielder. The Spurs are not willing to let go of their prized midfielder and are expected to reject http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786’s second bid.
