Bluetooth power consumption?

i notice that with most devices you can chose whether to have the bluetooth power on or off. is this a power consumption issue? does having bluetooth on use more energy? i also thought maybe it was just a security issue...

If you power Bluetooth on, it will use more power.  Why?  Because it's another feature the device has to turn on which will use some of the RAM of the device which therefore, consumes power.  And yes, it is a security issue.  You should only turn it on when you need it because people can try to connect to your device using bluetooth when it's on.  For example, I know of a Bluetooth hack that will connect to any phone (using your own phone) if their bluetooth is powered on.  So in conclusion, don't turn Bluetooth on unless you're going to use it right then.
