Question:

Bluray 24P vs 60P?

I made a stupid error.... I bought a Bluray player without verifying if my TV is optimal. It gives me, obviously, 1080p/24P whereas my TV will only support 1080p/60p (it is a 50" Sony SXRD). Is this the reason why my picture quality isn't as "3D-like" when compared to the movies they show in Best Buy? Is there anything I can do to improve my picture quality (ie some type of adapter, etc)?

  1. Actually it's 1080p/24Hz (Hertz) and the Hertz refresh rate will effect picture quality to some degree but not ss much as you think.  It will actually smooth out the fast action scenes on movies and make them a tad easier to see.

The best think you do is make sure your Bluray player is connected via HDMI, make sure you select 1080p in the resolution setting of the Bluray player and use a calibration disc to give your TV the best picture it can get.

I would suggest buying the Bluray disc "DVE HD Calibration disc"  Here's a link to all that it does.   http://www.videoessentials.com/products_...

There are many "gimmicks" that Best Buy does to their TV's and pretty much none of them are good for your TV so I wouldn't compare em.

  2. You will find very little difference between the 60p into your set and 24p into a 120Hz set that accepts it.  The only thing that 24p does for you show smoother motion of moving objects and pans.  The 60p picture is a little uneven in its motion because from the orginal 24p movie frames, 3 60 Hz frames come from one movie frame and only 2 60 Hz frames comes from the next.  In the movie theater all frames get the same time of display.  This unequal duration of display produces an uneveness of motion (judder) that is eliminated by the 120 Hz set and a 24 Hz input.  Some people say this gives the picture a "3D" look, but I don't see it.

The 120 Hz set will take one 24 Hz movie frame and show it five times at 120 HZ.  Even more, the 5 frames are not the same, since the set will create "new" frames that fill in the motion so that the result is actually smoother than what you see in the theater.

While these effects are definitely noticeable and desireable, the look of 60p from the blu ray is still very good.

There is nothing you can do to get this without getting a new 120 Hz TV.

By getting a blu-ray player you are getting 90% of the improvement available over standard DVD, so I don't think you made an error.
