Question:

Bluray or Tivo for time shifting Hi-def TV?

We still have the old VHS and DVD system. I'm pretty sure neither can capture the full range of hi-def TV programing for later viewing. I'm sure this has been asked before, but if we upgrade, which should we get -- a DVR or a Bluray? We're leaning towards Bluray for the prerecorded playback capability, but does it record the full range of hi-def TV broadcasts? Does a DVR?

  1. Blu-Ray DVD recorders do record in 1080P (high def.) but are very costly right now.

HD-DVR Records in hi-def as well and you usually can get that free (with monthly fee's) from Cable, Dish, or DirectTV.

  2. get blueray its a lot better picture but can be quite expencive

  3. Blu-Ray is the only one right now that can achieve true 1080P, however this is only available on blu-ray discs. The majority of TV broadcast stations transmit in 720P but a few are transmitting in 1080i. As far as I know all cable and satellite feeds are in 720p. Blu-Ray recorders are available for PCs right now but stand alone ones are very scarce. Although a few are starting to show up world wide. Some have truly great features, all are expensive. Blu-Ray also upscales 480P, 720P, and 1080i to 1080p.   Most HD DVRs can record and playback at 720p and 1080i which is the standard for broadcast TV. So if you are recording a lot of TV shows for playback later then erase them, go for the DVR. If you are playing pre-recorded DVDs or want to record DVD to play back and save then get a Blu-Ray. Or do what I did and get a Blu-Ray DVD standalone player, A Blu-Ray burner for the PC, and a DVR to record TV shows. It's a whole new time and now in order to enjoy the latest and greatest we have to cough up the money or be happy with what we got.
