  1. For its price and features, the PS3 is still considered the best blu-ray player on the market, even if you never ever actually use the PS3 to play a game.  The main reason for this is that the PS3 is one of the very few blu-ray players on the market that is compatible with the new blu-ray 2.0 spec.  While 2.0 discs will play in most older, pre-blu-ray 2.0 players, some of the special features may not work properly.

However, due to the PS3's internet access and powerful hardware, it's easy to roll out new functionality to the PS3 via downloadable updates.

  2. If you don't mind not being able to use a universal remote to control the PS3, and you don't mind the poor menu navigation, and you don't mind the INSANE amount of power the PS3 consumes - then sure - get a PS3 for only Blu-ray.

I think you would be better off watching for the deals that are starting to pop up for stand alone players for under $200. They are around and will be common at that price point for Black Friday shopping and the upcoming Christmas season.
