Question:

Bmx dirt jumping vs mountain bike dirt jumping?

I've been bmxing for 5 years or so. I ride mainly park and street but hit the dirt jumps once in a while. I want to get into mountain biking, at first I was thinking downhill but the nearest place to ride downhill is an hour drive away and with gas prices, I wouldn't go often. There's a lot of trails/freeriding in my area plus bmx tracks and dirt jumping parks/trails.

My question is, would I be able to go bigger on a mountain bike instead of a bmx when it comes to dirt jumping? Right now my bmx is setup for street, I ride a very small frame (20x13.5) so either way, I need a seperate setup for dirt whether it's a bmx or mountain bike. I'm also short at 5'6...not sure if that makes a difference.

  1. Well it depends what your style is. If you're looking to go bigger it all depends on the bike. If you're shocks are too soft on a mountain bike, you wont be able to get the pop you want off the lip of the jump, but they're a little more forgiving. A BMX is good for jumps like step ups because there's no shocks. But they're less forgiving if you don't get the landing you want.

  2. Well a BMX bike would be lighter for alittle more height and hangtime.  But, Mountain bikes come with shocks which could give you more spring coming up ,but thats if you're strong enough to put up and balance out the bike.  And, for the landing the mountain bike would absorb the impact, unlike a BMX bike where you would absorb the impact yourself.
