Bo Jackson backs Cam Newton's Heisman bid
Just eight games into the season, 1985 Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson already has his mind made up. The former Auburn University running back, considered by some to be one of the greatest college football
players of all time, announced that his vote for this year’s Heisman award will go to quarterback (and fellow Auburn Tiger) Cam Newton.
As is customary, every former recipient of the Heisman Trophy is allowed to cast a yearly vote for the athlete they believe to be most deserving of the prestigious award.
Jackson admitted that he has been hoping over the past 25 years that someone from his alma mater would come into contention for college football’s most coveted individual prize.
“When he's out on the field, it's almost like he's a man amongst boys,” Jackson said. “He's patient. He knows what he's doing, and he's having fun doing it. That's the thing about it. Everybody is having
fun. Look at those stands. We haven't seen that in a long time at Auburn.”
Even a player as accomplished as Jackson can appreciate the talent and promise that Newton has displayed thus far, something that he and many Auburn enthusiasts have been longing for.
Newton’s stellar play for the Auburn Tigers this season gives Jackson that opportunity. The 6ft 6in, 250lb quarterback has led his team to an 9-0 start, garnering a No. 1 ranking in the BCS, and propelling
the Tigers to the front of the line as far as national title contenders are concerned.
What makes Newton so difficult to contain, even in the almighty Southeastern Conference (where defence reigns supreme), is that the Tigers’ play-caller has the ability to defeat his opponents with both his
arm and his legs. He has already amassed 1122 rushing yards this season, complementing his 15 touchdowns through the air, and keeping opposing defences off balance.
