Montepaschi Siena stayed unbeaten in Group D after downing Union Olimpija 79-57 in Siena’s Palestra Arena on October 27, 2011. It was second straight defeat for Olimpija.
Bo McCalebb scored a game high 17 points on a perfect 7 for 7 shooting from two-point range. Ksistof Lavrinovic racked up 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had three steals; Rimantas Kaukenas added 11 points while David Moss
put in 10 points for Siena.
Davis Bertans was the only player for Olimpija who reached the double figures with 12 points on 2 for 4 shooting from three-point range. Robert Rothbart and Ratko Varda contributed seven points each in the loss.
Montepaschi entered Palestra Arena with an aim to win their first game of the season at home and scored the first four points of the opening period. Ratko Varda responded with a layup but Olimpija went scoreless for the next six
minutes of the first quarter. Siena racked up 17 consecutive points during that stretch to take a commendable 21-2 lead.
Danny Green hit a pair of free throws to finally break the scoreless spell but Shaun Stonerook drilled five unanswered points in the closing minute of the quarter to hand Sienna an impressive 26-4 lead going into the second.
After the first quarter nightmare, Olimpija did not give up and opened the second quarter on a 14-6 run. Montepaschi however continued to dominate and maintained a 14-point lead, 38-24 with nearly a minute to go in the first half.
Olimpija finished off with five unanswered points in and trimmed their deficit to nine, 38-29, at halftime.
Montepaschi stretched their lead back to double-digit, 48-35, early in the third quarter and further firmed their grip on the game. Olimpija struggled to keep up with the hosts who were up by as many as 21 points, 61-40 when the
third quarter ended. The one way traffic continued in the last 10 minutes as well. Siena did not allow Olimpija to get any closer than 17 points and walked away with another solid victory.
Montepaschi Siena Head Coach Pianigiani Simone was satisfied after the game “A good game in our defensive and offensive approach, as we showed good collaboration and an ability to do find good solutions. We played a solid first
and third quarter. In the last one we maintained control. It was a good game, but we have to work more to reach the next round."
