Bo Porter, Houston Astros’ players meet at CAREavan, discuss Spring Training- MLB News
During last week’s annual CAREavan event, recently appointed Houston Astros’ manager Bo Porter got a chance to meet some of the players that will be under his leadership in the upcoming season. Porter replaced Brad Mills in September of 2012.
The Astros have been in dire straits and have lost over a hundred games during the regular season in successive years. The team is now moving to a highly competitive American League West and the competition is likely going to get stiffer.
Bo recently said that the players are at a stage where they are looking eager to get going for Spring Training.
"Once you get to this stage of the offseason, guys are itching to get to Spring Training," Porter said.
He also stated that he has had a fair amount of conversations about the upcoming Spring Training and what is expected of the players in that period. Bo said that the players are ready to go ahead for the spring time.
"A lot of the conversations were built around the expectations of the spring, but, at the same time, we're just ready to start," Porter said.
The player that he met, included Jed Lowrie, Brett Wallace, Jose Altuve, Justin Maxwell, Jason Castro and Lucas Harrell. The players seemed impressed by the manager and all had kind words for their new skipper.
Brett Wallace knows that his team has gotten an excellent manager in shape of Bo and expects the manager to back his players. Wallace thinks that the players will show similar flare and will want to win for the manager. He is glad that they have someone
at the help of affairs who is well acquainted with the game.
He said, "I think he's awesome. He seems like he's definitely got your back, and he's definitely passionate. I think any time you play for someone who's really into the game."
Similar opinion came from outfielder Justin Maxwell who saw the new manager as an integral part of the team. Justin knows that there are going to be a lot of expectation from the Astros players in the coming season.
"Bo's going to be an integral part of our team," Maxwell said. "Obviously, he's the manager, but just his personality -- he's going to expect a lot of us as a team."
If the Houston ball club has to reverse its fortunes in the 2013 season, the team will be looking to pull something phenomenal off. One can assume that the target for the upcoming season will not be to reach the post season but to rather improve upon the
record and lose fewer games than the previous two years.
We hope that the team can show some grit and take the fight to the opposition and give its fans something to cheer about.
