Bo Van Pelt grabs third round lead at the RBC Canadian Open on PGA Tour
American Bo Van Pelt pulled in quite a show on the third day of the RBC Canadian Open at difficult Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, Vancouver to grab the lead from the rest of the field by one shot.
The 36-year-old played stunning golf throughout the day shooting the fairways as if with a bow and arrow, hitting several greens in regulation and warming up the local Vancouver audience who lauded his efforts on the turf. He carded a third round score of
five-under, 65 and will now be heading into the final round with a one shot lead.
“If you are hitting every fairway and green after nine holes there is no way you should be over par,” Van Pelt said. “You never know you are going to shoot 29. You have to drive it in play. If you drive it in rough, you can't hit the green. I grew up on
a tree-lined golf course with small greens, so from a visual standpoint, I like the looks of it.”
Van Pelt, who hails from Indiana, has posted some strong finishes in the season and is still hoping to bag a victory on the PGA Tour this year. Posting five consecutive Top-15 finishes, Van Pelt went into the Open Championship last week only to end up for
a disappointing joint 57th. His unfamiliarity with the Links Golf made him suffer all through the event but has now come back with visible aplomb.
He opened up his RBC Canadian Open bid with an impressive 68 but slumped to an over-par score of 72 on the second day battering the thick roughs and notoriously narrow fairways. Van Pelt carded seven birdies, most of them coming on the back nine and dropped
just two shots, both of them on the front nine on the third day.
Adam Hadwin, the local crowd favourite and who has qualified for the event on a sponsor’s exemption, posted a stunning four-under, 68 on the third day to finish for an outright second, trailing the leader by one shot. First round leader Kris Blanks and Argentinean
Andres Romero settled for the third spot with their aggregate scores of 207 each.
