Bo Van Pelt takes opening round lead at the AT&T National
Bo Van Pelt carded a four-under par 67 in the opening round of the AT&T National to take the lead at the Congressional Country Club, on Thursday, June 28, 2012.
Pelt started off on the back nine of the course and recorded seven consecutive pars prior to a birdie on the 17th hole.
The front nine of the course saw him make a quick start, as he managed to score an amazing eagle on the first hole followed by a birdie on the second.
Thereafter, he again parred seven consecutive holes to finish the round. The highlight of his round includes error-free strokes that allowed him to avoid bogeys throughout the day.
He now has a one-stroke lead over Fijian Vijay Singh, Zimbabwean Brendon de Jonge and Jimmy Walker from the United States.
According to him, the course features were like it was designed for a major championship. The greens were fast and it was difficult for the players to create birdie chances.
"It's all you want out there right now," Van Pelt said. "Basically you could have a U.S. Open here this week if you wanted it. The rough is very uniform, it's very thick. The greens are firm and they're fast. It's a great golf course, and when it's set up
like this, it's going to play tough all week".
Overall, Pelt looked pleased with his performance and said that he was happy to remain bogey-free at the end of the round.
“I got off to a good start,” he said. “I thought 10 through 14 I had hit a bunch of good shots and had some good birdie looks and didn't make any, and about a 25-footer for par on 15 that I made, just kind of kept my round going”.
Pelt is now eyeing another good round on Friday to make a good impression while entering the final two rounds.
In the meantime, Tiger Woods, the host of the event, carded a one-over par 72 to share the 30th spot on the leaderboard.
He mixed two birdies with three bogeys on a bright shiny day to settle five strokes behind Pelt.
