  1. I learned how to play go not long ago.

    I am still confused.

  2. Go is a very complicated game with a lot of rules and some strategies that you just cannot become a good player without.  I suggest that you find a teacher to teach you how to play, but I'll try to tell you some basics.

    First, you play stones on the grid intersections, not in the square spaces.  When you begin playing, you generally play on the star points first, the points that are darker than the rest.  Always hold the stone between your middle and index fingers when you are putting it down.  Unlike in chess, you can play wherever you want on the board.  The goal of the game is to get the most "territory" or "points" at the end.

    When playing go, the basic move is to try to capture your opponent's stones.  This can be achieved in many ways:

    +++O+++

    ++OXO++

    +++O+++

    In this first illustration, the X is dead because all of it straight (not diagonal) open spaces have been blocked with O's.  In go, the open spaces next to a stone that are necessary to maintain life are called "liberties."

    A stone can also be killed with less than four stones when in a corner of the board or against the edge of the board, like so:

    ++OXO+                ++++OX

    +++O+++               +++++O

    +++++++                ++++++

    In both these cases, X is dead because its liberties have been blocked off.

    While killing enemy stones in go is important, it is also important to protect your own stones.  Be careful not to play into a dead area of your own stones.  For example, if

    ++++++++

    ++++++OO

    +++++OXX

    ++++++XX

    is on the board, and your are playing X, you must realize that X is already dead because even if you played here,

    ++++++++

    ++++++OO

    +++++OXX

    +++++x*x

    your opponent could still do this and you will have lost one more stone than necessary:

    ++++++++                       ++++++++

    ++++++OO                      ++++++OO

    +++++OXX                      +++++O++

    ++++OXXX                      ++++O+++

    I hope you can understand that, and I'm sorry if I haven't made myself clear enough.  Once again, I suggest that you get a real go teacher.
