  1. Here's a list of the well-known boarding schools in California: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_boa...

The Thacher School in Ojai (near Santa Barbara) is the oldest in California, and it has some of the best financial aid for low-income and minority students. Each boarding school will have its own degree of financial aid offered, but I've found through the years that the older, more established boarding schools always have the best financial aid, usually because they have the best endowments.

When I was at boarding school the most amazing thing was how close you become with your friends, they practically become family. The education you get in boarding school is usually much better than at any other type of school, public or private, due to the small class sizes and academic environment. Even though the best boarding schools for academics are located in New England, there are also several good boarding schools on the West Coast. When looking at boarding schools, it's very important to know what past and present students are saying about it. Learn about its reputation, its flaws, its upsides and downsides, and its atmosphere. There are a variety of websites to find this information. One of the best is Boarding School Review (go here: http://www.boardingschoolreview.com/sear... ) as well as several other forums, such as College Confidential and of course, Yahoo! Answers. But, when it comes to choosing the location of the school you want to go to, never limit yourself. By looking for boarding schools only in California, a state that is not particularly well known for good boarding schools, you're missing out on so many others around the nation. However, if you have your mind set on California then it's best to start looking at all the schools in California right away.  When it comes to the application process, do not waste any time. Immediately request promotional materials from the school, such as pamphlets or related literature of some kind, from the school's website. And if they don't send out information, e-mail them asking for additional information anyway. The sooner you get on their radar, the better. Best of luck.
