Boat Fuel Problems?

Okay I am a new boat owner of a 1980 Imperial 17' boat. I know the engine is 120 hp and can tow people for tubing and so on. But I went to the gas stations to fill it up for the first time and only got like 5 gallons in it and then it started coming out of the vent on the side of the boat? Is this a small tank only 5 gallons or is something wrong? Second i got the boat in the water and it start but when I ran the pump gas was coming out of that also? And to top it all of my gauge for my gas does work how do i fix it?

  1. JD, I suggest that you take it to an experienced power boater and get some advice before you blow yourself and your boat to smithereens.

Take it to a boat dealer if all else fails and get some help.

  2. First, I dont know your boat and dont know how much fuel capacity the build-in  tank has. Mine holds17 gallon.

-If you say the gauge works than it should read full ?!

-I routed the tank vent hose in my boat from the tank to the highest point under the bow  and then to the side of the hull. the highest point of this hose must be as high as posible above the tank. This to prevent overflow.

-When the fuel pump leaks dont fix it, replace it! You dont want any fuel fumes in the engine compartment as there can be a high risk of explosion! Be sure the bilge ventilation works properly and use it before start up and while cruising
