Ok I'm not a mechanic at all,but since I've had the boat 3 months I have done quite a bit..Next problem now is My boat wouldn't go back or forward in water. But the props move when the water hose is hooked up..Someone told me that it is my prop has been spun..I put it in forward gear with the motor off and he was able to turn the prop freely.Would that be the cause of not moving in water? I have taken the prop off myself now SO WHAT SHOULD I BE ABLE to see TO tell wether thats the problem or NOT? Or should I just have the prop rebuilt and just give it a try?

  1. Rebuild the prop or purchase a new one and have the prop rebuilt for a spare.  That way you are able to use the boat and if the same thing happens again you are ready to go.

    Have Fun

  2. If the prop has been spun, You'll have'ta get it rebuilt ( new bushing ) from your favorite boat shop.

  3. sounds like a lower unit issue, since it doesn't work in either fwd or reverse.  in the lowr unit it could b gears, wich doesn't sound like it since it is both ways, the clutch dog could b out also, a morelikely senerio. also have u chk'd your shift rod, it might have came loose and that would do it also.  it is only held together with a bolt.  good luck, taking lower unit off is easy and pilling it apart is easy, if ya do replace your waterpump since your there neways.

  4. I bet you spun the prop, in a lot of ur smaller motors they use a sheer pin. If your motor is a smaller motor like 70 horse or under, otherwise you have a hub inside ur prop and you cant really tell by looking at it other than there may be some frayed rubber outside the hub spline. If it was gears or something bad in your lower unit you would hear some serios clunking or grinding sounds. Good Luck. Get the Prop hub rebuilt, about 80 to 90 bucks.

  5. the easiest thing to do is remove the prop and inspect the splines on the shaft and the prop. Most likely its the prop because they are usually made of aluminum or the like soft metal. The shaft is made of hardened steel, The only other thing that could be wrong is that you have a bad lower unit, and that will be an expensive$$$$$ fix.

  6. Some of the old Johnson Outboards have a pin in the drive shaft to connect the prop to the shaft.  Check and see if this pin is broken.  It was designed this way in case you hit a submerged objects so that the pin would shear and not bust the outdrive.  A hose to the impeller just pumps water and the prop might spin by itself.  Has nothing to do with operation of the prop.  When in gear the prop should only turn in the direction it is supposed to Forward or Reverse.  If it spins either way and the shear pin is not broken; then you need to take it to a dealer for overhaul repairs.  Good luck.
