Question:

Boat Motor Problem - why does it sputter and die?

I just bought my first boat (used). The boat motor had been completely gone over, all lines cleaned, etc. Took it out and it ran perfect. It's an outboard Suzuki 65 hp. Took it out a second time and it ran great for about 10 minutes. I shut it off to fish awhile. When I started it again, it started fine, but anytime I engaged the transmission, either forward or reverse, it would sputter and die. I tried many times and it always starts, but won't allow you to rev up before it dies. I checked the fuel ball and it was fine. The only thing I had done between these two trips was add 2 cycle oil to the resevoir. What can it be???

  1. the gas isnt getig to the carb so make sure the wents are open in your gas tank

  2. maybe it could be the diafram in fuel pump

  3. most likely old gas, water in the gas, debris in the tank, and/or clogged carbs.

First, compression test.  all cylinders should be within 7% or so.

Next, spark test.  Not a *spark plug* test.  Spark should jump a 7/16" gap on an inline tester outside the cylinder.

If problem persists with good compression, good spark & good fuel, rebuild the carbs with new carb kits.  soak the metal parts overnight in carb cleaner.

Highly recommend you get your hands on a good service manual.

If the water pump impeller is more than 2 years old or you don't know the age, this would be a good time to replace it.
