Just bought a Bayliner Jazz 1993. Took it out on the water and wow was I upset. I really hope someone can help me out. It starts hard and seems to choke bad. Took me about 15 minutes to get it started. Once I did, I took it out of neutral and it died. It does that every time. So to get it to go I had to do it quickly and floor it. When I did it sounded as it choked a lot. The max speed I went was about 10mph. Got to the other side of the lake and it died. It would not turn over anymore. After being towed back, I tried it again and it started. But same problem with the neutral killing it. PLEASE someone help me out here. This is my first boat and its become a mess.

  1. Do what steplift said - you have to get that carb squared away. Get a repair manual - so you know where and how to replace the fuel fitters.

The clicking noise is your out-drive engaging / disengaging. But you should not hear it underway. Check the prop - is it on tight? There is a nut with bent over tabs, pull them tord you. You should remove the prop anyway to check for fishing line. Grab the shaft - it should move very slightly in and out. Like I said get a manual -drain the out-drive and check it for water in the gear grease. If you do - the sound should be gears grinding. Good luck. Hope this helps.

  2. since its your first boat congradulations now lets get started

first thing to do is give it a complete tune up plugs--wires--fuel filter--dist,cap[if its a inboard]  carb cleaner tah see what happenes  plus you didnt say what kind of engine you have--inboard--outboard  that will help

  3. Buy a new Carb after you replace the old fuel and change the fuel lines and fuel filter (the easy fix for a new boater).

I would think the fuel was bad and everything is gummed up.

    Welcome to the boating world.

  4. sounds like a carberation problem. If the engine sat all winter without any gas treatment then your carb is gummed up and so would the fuel tank be if its an I/O. You can run carb cleaner through it but best bet is take it to a reliable shop and get it done right.

  5. check for water in the fuel. Install gas line anti freeze in tank and run motor. Change filters. If this does not solve problem clean carb. Check distributor cap for water in it.I had a boat that did that and all it was was water in gas. One litre of gas anti freeze and it ran like new!!

  6. Check the fuel filter first, pull it off and watch for water or anything that shouldnt be in the fuel. It sounds like its picked up water. Just for the record the boat should have a in line water seperator and its something that needs empting regularly. You might check and make sure that the rubber oring is still on the underside of the filler cap. Where you put fuel in the boat, if its missing rain water will make its way into the fuel tank. If this has happened no big deal no big deal just jack up the front of the boat trailer remove the fuel line install a hose extention where you can get your fuel line all the way to the ground and sifin all the fuel and water out of the tank install the inline fuel seperator ad a good fuel additive to your tank, new fuel and roll. Oh it'll probley pay off to remove the carburator and clean it out good, you don't have to take it apart just turn it upside down and let it drain out and spray it out with carb cleaner, It should be fine after the reinstall...

    Hope this helps...

  7. I agree with everyone here.  But how long were you out with the boat with the previous owner?

Check the fuel filters... check if you have fuel!

    Try spraying carb cleaner
