WE WILL GET IT STARTED PRETTY EASY WHEN FIRST PUTTING IT IN. AFTER WE RUN FOR AWHILE THEN SET AND CHILL AND TRY TO RESTART IT TAKES ABOUT 15MIN TO 1/2 HOUR TO START. POWER STRONG FROM BATTERY JUST TAKES FOR EVER TO FIRE. IF WE SHUT IT OFF IT WILL QUICKLY RESTART BUT JUST AFTER SETTING IT JUST WONT. IT IS A 4 CYL MERCRUISER OUT BOARD. 85 HP. THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!

  1. It must have to do with your carburetor and timing.  Try different ways of choking it.

  2. Try running on a remote tank> The vent may be plugged and pulls the fuel out of the fuel system when shut off>

  3. Actually, the problem is that once the engine gets up to temperature, it takes some time cool back down.  When you start it cold, I'm guessing you give it throttle and also choke the engine while cranking.   After it's been running for say an hour, and you turn it off, it takes a while to cool down.  Try cranking with just a little throttle and don't choke at all.

  4. one thing I know will cause this, is if the carb float valves & seats are worn, a little fuel leaks through into the cylinders.  gradually, flooding it.

If lifting the hi-idle lever about half way causes it to start, it's a pretty good bet a carb rebuild will make it better.

but you don't want to tear your carbs down until you've checked for spark, during the time which it won't start.  you'll need to drive it around then shut it off by the dock where you can work on it.  remove a plug, reattach it to the boot, hold it against the engine block and look for spark while somebody turns the engine over with the key.

Avoid electric shock by using a plastic or insulated tool.  Or just ask somebody you don't much like to help out.  :D

No spark, you'll need to trouble shoot the ignition system.

Also might want to inspect the plugs when it shuts down, see if they're wet or dry.

  5. did you tune it up   you should

    sparkplugs

    wires

    dist cap

    rotor

    fuel filter

    clean the carb

    then see what happens

    and air filter

and have timing checked but its probably ok
