  1. Thre is no need to turn it on very hard, just a light to moderate flow. Remember, there is an impeller inside that circulates the water

  2. Turn the hose on all the way.  You can run it like this basically forever.  You can put it in gear, but DO NOT throttle up, the prop and engine need water resistance or it can damage parts.  You will not be able to see how your boat reacts like it would under load, on the water, but some things can be determined this way.

My biggest question is this:  If you weren't sure about the basics like water pressure and how long you can run the engine with the ear muffs on - how the h**l are you going to diagnose and repair an engine!?!?!?

  3. You can run it as long as you want, BUT if it's an outboard, you should never ever run it in gear with it running at more than an idle, out of water.

The engine could rev up and there is no way to shut it down. It will ruin the engine.

  4. I agree with 80's Kid, it's a scary thought that you don't know something so basic, and you are out there operating a power boat. Get a reputable marine mechanic to look at your engine, and get yourself into some boating classes.

  5. You can turn it on full. If there is to much pressure it will just blow out of the muffs since they are not sealed tight to the outdrive. You can run the engine all you need as long as you have good water supplied to it.  If you don't have the water on high enough and rev the engine that  impeller will pump faster then the water is coming in so don't skimp on it. You can also rev it up a bit as needed, even in gear. Just keep away from the prop. However you will not simulate the engine under load out of the water.
