I have a 120 hp mercury engine I/O. I took this out last week and it worked fine. Then when i took it out monday it started giving me problems. It started and we took one person tubing then i turn the motor off to let him back in the boat. As i tried to start it back up it woudnt start it just click. We check the battery well on the water and reconnected the terminals. The tilt, blower, lights work but my pump doesnt still when i turn the switch. So I know nothing more about boats what should i do or check?

  1. Like above, the battery!

  2. you burned out the starter buy a new one or get it fixed

  3. Clean the battery terminals and posts till they are shiny, get a battery brush at auto supply. Problem solved.

  4. Sounds like either the battery is dead or the charging system is faulty.  First, fully charge the battery.  If it starts up fine after that, you need to check battery voltage while the engine is running.  Make sure you get at least 13 volts at idle.  If you only get 12 volts, and it drops over time, your alternator is dead or you have a loose cable somewhere.

If you charge the battery and it still just clicks, it's likely a bad starter solenoid.  Test it by locating the solenoid and using a LARGE screwdriver, jump the two big terminals together.  The engine should crank when you do that.  If you jump the terminals and get no cranking, and your battery is good, then it's the starter.

    Good luck.

  5. If you do not have 2 batteries on your boat, and if it's compatable, take the battery out of your vehicle and try it on the boat.  We've had this issue several times and it was always the battery. Good luck

  6. you should charge it if, you have done a short run, clicking sounds like a flat battery or a jammed starter motor
