  1. Houseboats are cheap as can be compared to yachts. But you should be looking at roughly $20,000, for a decent one. I suggest something around 30-35 feet in length. Like, Marinette's, Trawlers, Egg Harbors... such like that. They're easy to handle by yourself and some can look cool. If you go to yachtworld.com, and do an advanced search, you can get a good feel for style and price. Good luck on your search.

  2. they can be just like cars from $10.000 to $30.000. used ones can be really cheap, the older they are, the cheaper they can be.

I was just looking and I saw a boat from the '80s for around $6.500. I'm not sure if you can live on it, but it looked really big.

  3. You mention you would like to live on a boat "when I get older" but, you don't mention how old you are now... So here is my suggestion:

    Start building your own!

Is that a scary thought?  It shouldn't be... and here is why:

    1. new products and new techniques have made home-made, Do -it - Yourself (DIY) boat building a whole lot easier, safer, and successful then in the past... and the result will be a better, stronger, last longer vessel that will also be bigger (if you want it to be) then any boat you could buy on the market at "probably" 2 or 3 or more times the price.

So... go to  >  WWW.GLENL.COM  <  and check out the possibilities... and remember this:

Since you are young... and since you want to live on your boat "in the future"...

You need to plan that in - when you choose your boat building plans...  Consider your boat building "project" as a "loan" to yourself... In other words... If you can make $3,000 a year working part time... you can probably pick out a boat to build that will cost you $18,000 or even $21,000 to build... Because you are not going to build your boat in one year... you are going to build it over a period of 5 or 6 years... And WOW!  At the end of 5 or 6 years, you have a completed custom built boat - built to fit your needs and your desires... and best of all... not only will it compare to boats costing $50,000 or more... Yours will be paid for, because you worked and paid for yours as you built it...

What to see how easy it is?

visit > www.boatwrights.org < and click on the "SummerWind" page... there, you can see progressive build pictures of the boat I now live on...

But, more importantly... visit > www.glenl.com < for boat plans, and to learn more about boat building methods.

One more suggestion:  If this looks attractive to you... Then, I

"strongly" suggest you start with a small (very small) boat to build at first... find plans for a "sailing dinghy" you can build now, in a week or weekend or month - that will only cost you a couple hundred dollars... (What fun that will be!) Do it first (It will come in handy on your big boat later.) But this will give you "first hand" experience, at minimal investment... and you will learn how really easy it is, and give you an idea of the time, money, tools, etc. you will need.

Of course, in order for this to work... you will need a place to build your boat... so I hope it all works out for you...

As a footnote... I have two "boat building - students" of mine from years ago... that now have the biggest and most beautiful boats in their Marina...   ( and they are paid for! )

    Good luck.
