Question:

Boat starter cranks slow and makes a thud sound sometimes?

I have a 2003 volvo penta and I recently blew the starter trying to turn the boat over due to another issue with the carb. I replaced the starter with a brand new one. After installing I went to crank it and it was cranking slow. A few of the times it made a thud sound almost like something was jamming the flywheel. I did not have the resources to check the battery, but did charge it and it did nothing. My next step will be to take the battery to advanced auto and have them test it, but I am doubtfull it is the battery. I would appreciate any input that could help me troublshoot this issue. I am very concerned about the thud sound that it makes usually on the third or fourth crank.

  1. I agree with Mr fixit.  I don't think it's the starter or battery.  Before you do more damage, get an engine man to check it out.  There is a possibility that you got a starter that looks the same, but doesn't have the correct torque for this engine.   Check the part numbers carefully.

the first place as to why you burnt out the starter. If you have your battery checked and it is ok,I suggest you remove your spark plugs and then turn it over to see if this solves your problem. If it does you have gotten water inside the engine and it is hydraulically locking it up.Do not keep trying to start it like this because you could bend a connecting rod.If you are sure it is something jammed in the flywheel you will need to remove the engine to get it out.Good luck.
