I bought a 1992 Bass tracker Nitro with a blown up 1998 evinrude 115 hp motor. I put a 1978 evinrude 85 hp on the boat. I used the steering cable on the nitro and now I have full turning to the left and only about 1/2 of the full turn to the right. The bar at the end of the steering cable, the slides thru the front of the motor is 1.5 inches longer on the boat i took the 85 hp motor off of than my nitro. The cable from the other boat is a universal kit, and the one on the nitro is a manufactured deal so i just cant switch the cables. What do I do??? do i need a longer or shorter steering link? Is it possible to take the hudraulic steering bar thing off the end of one cable and put it on another?? really need help, thanks

  1. The "ARM" is what controls the center point. But if you have a rack and pinion Helm unit, It might not be installed correctly.  Also the Arm kit is made for different motors.  I'd take the boat by a `dealer and let him advise you of the best way to fix this problem.  It might be a simple adjustment, or ........

  2. I had a very similar problem when i changed engines on an 18ft icelander fast fisher,it was factory fitted with a force 85hp and went like the clappers but alas time took its toll like it does and it was a case of spend some more money ,you that owns a boat!!! I bought a brand new mariner 90hp and fitted it with an engine hoist, the wiring loom came with it and was pretty straightforward, the steering was a b*****d!!! i ended up taking it to a reputable marine engineers to sort out,,it had all new gear fitted including steering wheel for £350,,let them sort it mate, saves loads of worries.
