I'm thinking of buying a boat for $100 it 12ft 4 person boat. but the guy says they lost the title 9 years ago do i need to get a new one or what can we do..

  1. Be careful there is no lien on it - the owner may owe $500. on it. If you buy the boat you inherit that debt and may lose the boat as well as what you paid for it when they come to collect.


  2. ck with your state licensing dept. each state is probably different.  considering 100 bucks and the size, the owner might be able to give you a bill of sale explaining he doesn't have the title. Does it have any registration numbers on it? they can check it out if it does.

  3. I'm surprised a boat that small needs to be titled.   He may mean registered.   The current owner can apply for a duplicate title and/or registration from the country courthouse and bring it up to date.   This will probably involve a fair bit of money on his part, but my advice is don't even think about buying a boat that should be registerd and/or titled without having the  proper paperwork up to date.  

    You can also check with your country courthouse to see if this particular boat needs to be registered and or titled in your state.   This will be handled by either the department of motor vehicles or the registrars office.
