Question:

Boaties > Should I go ahead with a "towed garden" ?

Hi,

I have been offered an empty barge, about the same lenght of this boat at 60ft.

My notion is to put about 2ft of soil in it and grow veg & flowers, and either put it alongside, or butterfly tow it behind, depending on which part of the system I'm on.

I haven't seen this done yet, but in true Boatie style, maybe a new notion.

The engine will handle it, although using more fuel, and it would be painted to match the boat.

What do you reckon, and can you see any downfalls ?

  1. how would it affect your insurance?

apart from this i cant see any probs.

    go for it

it seems like a great idea, very innovative and you,ll stand out from the crowd

  2. You won't be all that popular at a narrow lock on a summer weekend,  especially if you are a single-handed boater!

Are you a continuous cruiser?  Double Waterways Licence, extra insurance, double mooring costs - wouldn't it be cheaper to pop into a Tesco or buy from a farm shop along the cut?

Sounds fun, but I'm not sure how practical it is.

  3. You need to think hard about how you will stop it when you reach a lock -- it'll have a mind of its own!

  4. I don't know if you would need to register

    the other barge

    but what a fantastic idea

I for one would like to see that

and I wish you the very best of luck with your project
