  1. Sure you can get from Annapolis to Pittsburgh, you have 2 routes available.  North through the Hudson, great lakes, Illinois River to the Mississippi to the Ohio and up to Pittsburgh  OR  south down the ICW or offshore, up to Mobile and up the Tenn Tomm to the Tennessee River to the Ohio River and on up Pittsburgh.  My choice would be the Northern route spending as much time in The North Channel of Lake Huron as possible.  For my money the best cruising in the world for many reasons.  Leave Chicago and head south in early November to enjoy the fall on the lakes.  Watch the weather late season and pick your travel days as Lake MI can get a bit snotty in the fall.

  2. it used to be you could go up the Susquehanna and over the mountains on "The Allegheny Portage".a complex series of canals and locks that took you up and over the mountains....

used to be  refers to about 1840 when the canals were put out of business by the railroads....so now a days you can go up the Susquehanna or the Hudson/Erie Canal but then have to go overland to the headwaters of the Allegheny/Monongahela

  3. Yes, if your boat is less than 1000' long, and is not too high, by going down to the mouth of the  Mississippi, up the river, turn right on the Ohio, and you will soon find yourself at Pittsburgh. It is a long way from Annapolis by water.
