  1. Depends on where you are. In Canada you need "The Operators Card" available online from Transport Canada. For the US, contact your local Coast Guard for requirements in your jurisdiction..

  2. Depends where you live, in Tennessee, if you you were born before 1989 then you can drive a boat with no liscense. If you were born after you have to take a 70 question test [it's pretty easy]. To legally drive a watercraft alone you have to be over 13 and have taken the test.

  3. I am assuming that you are speaking of a Captain's License.  Which is issued by the Coast Guard and not a state boating license.  There are very few states that require a "boating license.  Florida, Alabama, and California require licenses under certain circumstances.  There are probably others I am unaware of.  In Florida you take the online boating safety course or the 6 night class, get a certificate, and take it to the DMV to have the endorsement put on your regular Driver's License.  As for the Coast Guard license, the basic license or OUPV (Operator Uninspected Passenger Vessel) or Six Pack as it is sometimes called you have to be 18 years old and have 365 Documented days of operating a boat.  Think of it as a Log book that you write down everytime you take your boat out.  180 of your days have to be in the last 3 years.  I would first start logging your days, then buy a copy of Chapman's Small Boat Handling and Seamanship.  Once you have your days logged then you can go to a school like Sea School, Howston or Houston (I can never remember how it's spelled) and Chapman's School in South Florida.  Take their two to six week class and they can give you the exam.  Or you could just take your chances with the Coast Guard examining office and take the exam there. Once you have passed then just wait for your Captain's License in the mail.  By the way most insurance companies won't tell you this but they do give discounts (mine gives 15%) with a Captain's license, so that saves you a lot of money.

  4. In most states you need to take a boating safety course to drive any bat with an engine or electric motor. The age varies b state. The courses are given by United States Sail and Power Squadrons or US Coast Guard Auxiliary. There is a book. Some courses are given on line.

  5. Many states require that you take a boaters safety course

In Pennsylvania anyone born on or after January 1 1982 Must have in there possession a Boating Safety Education Certificate, When operating a boat of 25 hp or more

AND ANYONE operating a personal watercraft

These states DO NOT require any type of study course and/or test

    Alaska,Arizona,Arkansas,California,Haw... Mexico,Oklahoma,Washington,and Wyoming

ALL other states have Minimum requirements

Follow the Link Below To See Requirements for each state

  6. you do not have to have a license. but if you have never owned a boat or operated a boat before you should take a boaters safety course.
