  1. Summer, a fathometer tells how deep the water is. It works by sending sound waves down and measures how long they take to get back. It works very similar to SONAR, but in a higher frequency. The dial reads the depth in feet or in fathoms, as requested. This is an important part of navigation.

Things swimming in the water are not hurt by being passed over, any more than you are when you are swimming underwater, and someone swims over you on the surface, unless they get caught in the propeller.

    Regards,

    Dan

  2. Yes, there is equipment that tells the skipper how deep the water is... (thank goodness!)

As far as harming the snakes, fish and worms... honestly, I have never seen nor heard of any snakes, fish, or worms being hit or hurt by boats... It is not the boat the fish and worms have to worry about... it is the hook!

Manatees however, (which are fully aquatic marine mammals sometimes known as sea cows - are huge (some weighing over 1,000 lbs), and they are slow (they swim at about 3 mph), they are also very curious... as a result, they often get hit, hurt, killed by speeding boats (mostly in and around the Florida Keys and up the east coast. (Florida claims a manatee population of about 3,000.)

  3. Not most boats.

Only if they get caught up in the prop.

There are fish finders, sonar and depth gauges to tell how deep the water is. You can tell if the water is deep enough to ride in usually by color.

The critters that live in the water don't get hurt because they can get out of the way, and the force of the boat on the water creates a kind of forces that helps push them down. Snakes however might get whooped on the head with a paddle if I see 'em! (not really, I just don't want them in my boat).

  4. Well sometimes fish do get caught in the sea suction of bigger ships. They will end up in the stainer if the ship happens to travel through a school. Most of the time fish stay clear of boats and ships
