When anti AGWers say the temperature dropped from 1940 to 1975, you and Gengi and that lot say that it was increased CFC use that cooled the Earth down. This graph disagrees: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:AYool_CFC-11_history.png

  1. CFCs are a greenhouse gas. ergo they heat the earth up.

note its alot more complex then that because they destroy ozone which is also a greenhouse gas but this effect is much smaller then the effect of CFCs themselves.

what i think you are talking about is aerosols.

  2. CFC aren't the only greenhouse gas in our atmosphere. In fact as everyone else has said, we have never said that "global warming" was caused mostly by CFC. Its cause mostly by water vapor and CO2 as well as VOC and CFC. Since CFC are banned in most of the countries in the world with a few exceptions, how could CFC's  possible be the main cause for "global warming?"

And NEVER trust Wikipedia. Anyone can just go on and edit that graph to make you think that. I know every singe one of my teachers tell us not to use it and the all proved their point with false articles.

  3. I have NEVER said it was increased CFC use.  If that played a role, it was a minor one, and potentially in the direction of warming (it's complicated because of ozone).

The leveling off of global warming from 1940 to 1975 was simple air pollution.  The common term would be "smoke", the more scientific one "aerosols", mostly sulphates from burning coal.   The postwar boom saw those increase dramatically, roughly balancing out the increase in greenhouse gases.

Sometime around 1970, the use of pollution control equipment slowed the increase in aerosols, and the increase in greenhouse gases took over control.

All this is well explained in:

Meehl, G.A., W.M. Washington, C.A. Ammann, J.M. Arblaster, T.M.L. Wigleym and C. Tebaldi (2004). "Combinations of Natural and Anthropogenic Forcings in Twentieth-Century Climate". Journal of Climate 17: 3721-3727

    summarized at:

(which is NOT a wikipedia article, it's uneditable).

  4. That Bob sure has a answer for everything under the sun
