Bob Arum: I just hope we will be able to get the Mayweather fight done – Boxing News
Top Rank’s Bob Arum has been accused widely by fans for not being able to schedule a fight between two pound-for-pound kings, Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather. Now, it seems like Arum is the one who is most eager to get the showdown done, despite the
fact that both fighters are reaching their retirement.
“I just hope we will be able to get the Mayweather fight done,” said Arum in an interview to ESPN.com.
He added, “I don't think we can do it in November with Mayweather just being released from jail and so forth. I have had no signal from anybody on his side that he would be back so quick for a fight Nov. 10. I would think if we can make a deal it would be
in the spring, in April, after March Madness.”
Floyd Mayweather was released from a Las Vegas jail past Friday. He was sentenced to 90 days in prison, but was released after two months considering his good behaviour. Mayweather’s team has already announced that the fighter might be looking forward to
a temporary retirement, since his jail tenure has kept him deprived of good nutrition, making him weak and not fit for a fight right now.
On the other hand, Manny Pacquiao is spending most of his time helping his fellow Filipinos, especially the flood affected ones. Pacquiao is already speaking of retirement. However, the Filipino pride wants to face Mayweather before hanging up his gloves.
He is an also a congressman for his nation and beholds high political ambitions.
Talking about Pacquiao’s political goals, Arum said, “He's definitely running again. (Politics) is his future.”
Arum will be flying over to the Philippines to meet Pacquiao. The Hall of Famer promoter wants to decide Pacquiao’s next opponent for November 10. Arum is hoping for Pacquiao to accept Juan Manuel Marquez’s fourth match request or a second match against
Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto.
According to Arum, Cotto and Marquez are both good fight sellers. He is hopeful of Pacquiao not insisting on a rematch against Timothy Bradley this fall at least.
