Bob Arum confirms he can’t get through to Little Floyd
Floyd Mayweather Jr., the No.2 rated fighter in the world, is unavailable to all interested boxing parties trying to reach him.
That includes Top Rank chief Bob Arum and Golden Boy CEOs Richard Schaefer and Oscar De la Hoya, all of whom have a giant stake in trying to sway Mayweather to fight boxing sensation Manny Pacquiao.
Though negotiations towards a fight have been painful and harrowing, potential rewards would make up for the pains tenfold.
Pacquiao-Mayweather promises to be the biggest fight in the history of professional boxing.
Still, it remains a pipe dream for promoters like Arum, who confirmed Friday to philstar.com: “I have nothing to report on Mayweather because we haven’t been able to get to him.”
“The only thing we know about him is when he gets in [legal] trouble.  And it’s too bad,” the promoter said reluctantly.
Arum was referring to headlines earlier this week that indicated Mayweather had been charged with assault for running former associate Quincey Williams off the road, nothing less than a ‘fast and the furious’ inspired scene of road rage.
It isn’t the first time Williams and Mayweather have been involved in legal fretting, and it isn’t the last time in recent months Mayweather has been slapped with allegations of assault.
In September, Mayweather’s former baby mama Josie Harris had Mayweather arrested on charges of battery and larceny.  A court date looms in the near future.
In 2009 Williams was involved in an incident at a Las Vegas Skating Rink that saw one of Mayweather’s bodyguards open fire on him.  While Williams was uninjured, his vehicle bore the imprints of no less than six gunshots.
The incident was allegedly provoked by a text message from Williams. Williams had indicated that he secretly wished “Pretty Boy Floyd” would lose his upcoming fight against Juan Manuel Marquez.
Despite the troubles, Arum has remained faithful to the notion that Mayweather is his camp’s “number one priority” for Pacquiao.
That didn’t stop him from admitting, however, that Mayweather’s troubles were becoming increasingly difficult to manage.  “It’s almost like a bad movie,” Arum said.
