Bob Arum has fun with Bernard Hopkins comments
Bob Arum has responded to comments made by boxing legend Bernard Hopkins with equal parts controversy and wit.
Hopkins recently called into question why superstar Manny Pacquiao had not fought any African American fighters, and speculated that an “inner-city” style equated to African Americans would defeat "Pacman."
The speculations caused immediate backlash in the boxing world, with everyone from Arum to Pacquiao advisor Michael Koncz weighing in on the purported irrelevance of the claim.
Arum showed wit, responding he would appoint Hopkins his “mashgiach” for black fighters.
A mashgiach is a Jewish rabbi who certifies whether food is kosher and appropriate to eat for those who practice Orthodox Judaism.
Arum told FanHouse: “I have designated that Bernard is our mashgiach for picking our next African American opponent for Manny Pacquiao. We'll fight whomever he picks."
In March Pacquiao took on Ghana-born Joshua Clottey, but according to Hopkins Clottey was disqualified as the kind of opponent he was speaking of because he lacked the necessary “slick” style.
Hopkins said: “"Clottey is 'black,' but not a 'black boxer' from the states with a slick style. So you can't really say that Clottey is an African-American fighter in that sense.”
Hopkins, never one to back down at the podium, has an upcoming December 18 clash with Jean Pascal.  The bout will afford Hopkins a final opportunity to reclaim the glory of his former years and win the prestigious Ring Magazine light heavyweight title.
Pascal says that for his part he will not play the inexperienced student and allow the savvy Hopkins to use his superior ringmanship to “school” him.  Instead he pointed out at their press conference that he already has an academic diploma and that it will
lead him to victory.
Arum finalized his offer to Hopkins: “I'm going to send him a list with Mayweather, Mosley and Berto and see what he thinks.  I want to get Bernard's seal of approval as to which, if any, of them qualifies as a 'slick,' black fighter."
