Bob Arum not happy with Victor Ortiz vs. Floyd Mayweather fight card – Boxing news
The founder and chief of Top Rank, Robert ‘Bob’ Arum has revealed that he is not in favour of the Mexican-American professional boxer Victor Ortiz fighting against Floyd Mayweather.
The 2008 ESPN Prospect of the Year is scheduled to take on Ring Magazine’s number two pound-for-pound boxer of the world Floyd Mayweather in their 12-round bout on September 9, 2011 at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Arum believes the 24-year-old Victor ‘Vicious’ Ortiz is not very experienced or capable of securing his WBC Welterweight Title against the experienced five-time world champion Mayweather.
Golden Boy promotional company negotiated with Top Rank to make the fight possible. Mayweather is now returning to the ring to compete Ortiz after more than a year. In his last fight, Mayweather won the unanimous points decision over Shane Mosley on May
1, 2010 fighting at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
During his conversation with Satterfield, Arum disclosed, “Victor Ortiz is not nearly ready for Floyd Mayweather. And for Golden Boy to put Ortiz, who just won a title, in with Mayweather at this point in his career is something that, form a boxing standpoint,
makes no sense. Ortiz just won a title from Andre Berto and you figure that they would get him some more experience and have him make some title defences. And the amount that Victor Ortiz is getting paid is nothing spectacular. It's nowhere near what Manny
Pacquiao pays his opponents.”
The Southpaw stance Ortiz won a unanimous points decision in his last fight against Andre Berto on April 16, 2011. The two went face to face for their 12-round competitive bout at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut. Berto lost his WBC
Welterweight title in the process.
Arum mentioned that he does not want to waste a young guy like Ortiz into his next fight against the threatening Mayweather at this point of his growing career. He said he would not allow him to do so, as it was not a very wise thing to do so.
