Bob Arum says Floyd Mayweather cheated public by beating Victor Ortiz – Boxing news
The chief of Top Rank Promotions, Bob Arum, reckons Floyd Mayweather, who is a five-division world champion and the current World Boxing Council World Welterweight Champion, tarnished boxing and cheated the fans with the way he knocked out Victor Ortiz last
month.
Arum said that Mayweather put a dampener on boxing with his cheap shot. Though Arum admitted Mayweather did nothing illegal, he stated it was a complete lack of sportsmanship from Mayweather.
“Mayweather demonstrated a complete lack of sportsmanship and the public that paid for that was cheated,” Arum told ESPNLosAngeles.com. “I don't care about the baloney about protect yourself at all times and it's a legal shot. That's not the issue. The fighter
has the obligation to entertain the public and hitting this kid with two cheap shots really put a dampener on boxing. For me, f**k the legacy, he cheated the public.”
The Vicious, Ortiz and the Pretty Boy, Mayweather locked horns in their much-anticipated fight for the WBC World Welterweight title on September 17, 2011 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a great fight but unfortunately, it was cut short
when Mayweather secured a controversial knockout over Ortiz in the fourth round.
Ortiz intentionally head-butted Mayweather in the earlier stages of the fourth round for which he was docked a point. However, when the fight was reset, Ortiz went on to apologise Mayweather but Mayweather responded him with a left and right combination
which knocked out the Garden City pugilist.
In the end, Arum shared his thoughts on the super-fight between the undefeated American legend, Mayweather, and Manny ‘Pac-Man’ Pacquiao, who is an eight-division world champion and the current World Boxing Organisation Welterweight World Champion (Super
Champion). Arum remarked Mayweather will never fight Pacquiao because he knows Pacquiao is now equally good with his right hand as he is with his left.
“Once Manny demonstrated that fearsome right hand there was no chance ever that the fight would happen,” Arum said. “None. Don't kid yourself. I know Mayweather, everything else is bulls**t.”
Still, let’s see if Pacquiao and Mayweather sign a contract as their fight is certainly one of the most eagerly awaited fights in the sport.
