Bob Arum threatens legal action with Golden Boy for Chavez Jr. comments
After catching wind of Oscar De la Hoya’s comments concerning Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.’s alleged free agency, Top Rank chief Bob Arum is fuming.
In a recent video with Fanhouse, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De la Hoya said that he would like to pit his young star fighter, Saul Alvarez, against Chavez.  He then said that Chavez, who he claimed
will soon be rid of a contract with Top Rank, contacted Golden Boy about potentially signing with them in the future.
De la Hoya laimed he respected the contracts of other promotions, but also said Chavez Jr. looked to be a free agent.
"I believe that it's [Chavez Jr. vs. Alvarez] a possibility, absolutely. I believe that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. made some comments about being a free agent in Mexico. He has no more contract with Top Rank.
He has no more contract with [manager Fernando] Beltran. Obviously, if that's the case, then Julio Cesar Chavez has reached out to us already, saying that we can talk to him […] But we respect every other contract that every fighter has with every promoter,”
said De La Hoya.
Despite his disclaimer, Arum was furious when he read the comments, stating that Chavez still has two to three years on his contract with Top Rank.  Arum further said that he recently met with Zanfer Promotions
President Fernando Beltran (who co-promotes Chavez) to discuss a game plan for Chavez in the upcoming year.
"We currently have a two to three year contract with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.,” Arum snapped. “This is tortuous interference, and we're referring it to our lawyers, and we're going to take legal action against
this moron [De La Hoya]."
Earlier this week it was revealed Golden Boy filed a second lawsuit against Top Rank for moneys they feel have been withheld from them in a series of past Manny Pacquiao bouts.
Arum had more to say about Chavez, stating: "As recently as last week, Julio Jr. was in our office. There is no problem there. He came in with Fernando Beltran.  He's fighting on Dec. 4, and we have other
fights for him planned next year with Cotto. So, this is totally a baloney story. He's trying to tamper with one of our fighters."
