Bob Arum wants a June double-header
Top Rank’s Bob Arum has confirmed that he would like to head a June 11 double-header at the Giants’ stadium featuring a rematch between Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito and a clash between Yuri Foreman and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Fanhouse reports.
Arum’s plan would be to coincide the event with the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City.
The developments contradict early statements made by Chavez Jr., who indicated Arum had guaranteed him a bout with WBA junior middleweight king Cotto in March. Chavez had said in a boxingscene.com article: “Bob Arum promised me a fight with Miguel Cotto
in March, and that's what I want.”
Instead, Chavez will apparently get Foreman, the man whom Cotto beat to acquire his title.
In other words, seconds.
Cotto (35-2, 28 KOs) is coming off the triumphant win over Foreman (28-1, 8 KOs), a well needed boost after career low-point losses to Margarito and Manny Pacquiao.
A June rematch with Margarito would allow Cotto to prove he can beat the aggressive Mexican fighter, who was himself recently stopped by the sensational Pacquiao in Arlington, Texas.
Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs) was put to the ultimate boxing test for twelve rounds, visibly schooled by a much smaller but smarter and more tactical Pacquiao. Pacquiao was able to avoid pressure and earn Margarito’s respect in the ring, proving his power even
at the junior middleweight level.
Arum spoke about preparations for the June event, saying: “I have to sit down with Miguel [Cotto] and his adviser, and they're coming to Chavez's fight Dec. 4, and I want to see what they want to do.”
Arum continued: “What I want to do is irrelevant. I give the fighters their options of what I can produce and the prices that I can pay, or the guarantees that I can pay, and then, I leave it up to the fighters to choose. But if we're going to do those fights,
that would be a double-header.”
