Bob Baffert dreaming big, eyeing the Kentucky Derby with Liaison
The Bob Baffert trained 2-year-old colt, Liaison, had an amazing trip in the Grade 1, $750,000 CashCall Futurity and according to his trainer, the Kentucky bred colt is doing great and he has come out of the race scratch less.
Liaison gave his conditioner another milestone to celebrate, as he became the 6th horse Bob Baffert saddled to win in the $750,000 CashCall Futurity. Liaison could become another reason for Bob Baffert to rejoice when he brings home the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby.
That’s right, Bob Baffert is aiming at the big one for his super colt after a great 2011 debut season. The son of recently euthanized, Indian Charlie, out of mare Galloping Gal by Victory Gallop, Liaison posted his third straight win in the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity.
He was exiting a victory in the Real Quiet Stakes over a distance of 1 1/16 miles at Hollywood Park’s cushion track on 12 November, 2011.
Under his regular jocker, Rafael Bejarano, Liaison was again challenged by Rousing Sermon, the CashCall Futurity villain, but Liaison was too good for the runner up on both occasions as he downed Rousing Sermon in second and Senor Rain in third, while in the process covered the 1 1/16 mile distance in 1 minute and 44.72 seconds.
Liaison’s two big wins came at Hollywood Park over its cushion track, but he broke his maiden switching from synthetic surface to dirt, which means the colt has the potential to run over both surfaces easily and come out as a victor.
He broke his maiden at Santa Anita Park at second asking over a distance of seven furlongs on 14 October, 2011, on dirt and covered the distance in 1 minute and 22.61 seconds.
Bob Baffert has definitely put Liaison on the Derby track, but he will have to give the juvenile colt some races in between to get him familiarized to the Derby distance of 1 ¼ miles. For that Baffert said that the colt will be resurfaced at Santa Anita, but nothing is for certain right now because they would have to look at the races and most importantly the colt’s condition.
