Bob Baffert not happy with Coil’s workout and the Grade 1 Travers looks unclear for the Haskell winner
The Bob Baffert trained 3-year-old colt, Coil, went on to win the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational for his conditioner Bob Baffert, who had success in the same race at Monmouth Park last year with another horse, Lookin at Lucky.
Bob Baffert pulled Lookin at Lucky out of the Grade 1 Travers Stakes last year and chose to run his 2010 Haskell winner somewhere else.
Bob Baffert won the Haskell this year with Coil and he might be looking to pull Coil out of the Grade 1 Travers as well.
The Hall of Fame trainer is seriously considering to sideline the champion colt, Coil, from the Grade 1 Travers Stakes.
However, the trainer hasn’t seen the 13-year-old Point Given colt, because he was out of town when the colt turned in a six furlong's workout in about 1 minute and 12.98 seconds.
His decision might be based on the assessments of jockey Martin Garcia and his assistant, Jimmy Barnes, because on the morning of 17 August, Coil breezed on the main track and the two people assessing the colt must have sent a vibe to Bob Baffert that the
colt did not handle the track well.
Bob Baffert already said that the Saratoga track will be a demanding one and according to Martin Garcia, the colt did well but not good enough to meet the trainer’s expectations right before a big race like the Grade 1 Travers Stakes.
Coil is a very heavy horse and heavy horses sometime have problems on the Saratoga track.
Bob Baffert has had many issues with the Saratoga main track for a few weeks now and he thinks that the track is not being maintained well by the officials.
The initial plan for Coil’s training session was on 16 August, but the track was too sloppy and muddy for his liking so it got postponed to the next day.
